Book Buddy News – December 2018

November saw over 100 volunteer hours donated by our terrific Book Buddies.

By mid-month volunteers had emptied four huge Gaylord cartons, each holding up to 2,000 books! At this rate we’ll have them all emptied and boxed up for distribution by the end of January. We couldn’t do this without our faithful and very efficient volunteers. Groups volunteering in November included the Valero Vanguard, Reagan High School chapter of the National Honor Society, UTSA Voices, along with many new and longtime friends who come to swell the ranks on a regular basis — THANK YOU!  You are literally our most valuable assets.

Another volunteer asset is Al Koppen of Boerne. On a regular basis Al collects books and delivers a car-trunkful to Book Buddies. He has been doing this for a couple of years, since he first heard of Book Buddies and wanted to help the campaign for children’s literacy. Al is an all-around promoter of reading. He also delivers adult books to University Hospital and Brooke Army Medical Center, and he reads the local newspaper at broadcasts on a special radio station for people who are visually impaired or have other reading disabilities. Thank you, Al, for being a super reading advocate.

Not a Book Buddy yet? Just email us at bookbuddies@saylonline.wpengine.com, and we’ll include you in notices of times when you can volunteer. You can also run a book drive at your office, neighborhood, church, or club. Just let us know, and we can arrange pickup of the books. Not able to volunteer or run a book drive? We are always short of funds for supplies and freight from Better World Books. Just mark your donation indicating it’s for Book Buddies and send it to SAYL, 1616 E. Commerce St., San Antonio, TX 78205.

HAPPY HOLIDAYS, AND THANK YOU TO ALL OUR BOOK BUDDIES!

Jane Welch, Book Buddies Coordinator
