Reading Buddy Insider

Book Introductions and the Picture Walk
One way we can set students up for greater success when reading is by introducing and previewing a book before beginning to read. Many students are familiar with the process of taking a few minutes before reading a new book to discuss what they are about to read; however, other students are so eager to begin that they skip this step entirely. Previewing a text before beginning to read helps build students’ context for what they are about to encounter, which in turn helps them read more accurately and with better comprehension. Read the full tip here >>>

Book Buddy News

At Book Buddies the new year of book drives and volunteer activity is in full swing. Our Book Drive Committee, consisting of Maria Salinas, Rosa Maria Gonzalez, and Midge Breslof, is working on encouraging groups all over the city to hold book drives. And those books have been coming in! Concordia Lutheran Church, New Braunfels Public Library Book Sale, West Avenue Compassion, and our friends at Half-Price Books have contributed hundreds of books in just the last month. Read more >>

This month’s Reading Buddy goes to Ms. Lucy Blevins! Lucy has been a Reading Buddy since the 2013-2014 school year and is continuing into her 6th year. She is a volunteer at Bonham Academy and has enjoyed every minute of it. She first learned about the program through her company, AT&T, and was drawn to the program as an avid reader herself. get off to a strong start: Read more >>>
School Spotlight

Larkspur Elementary

Congratulations to our School of the Month – Larkspur! They have done an awesome job helping us roll out the Reading Buddy program this year. We started 26 Zachry Construction Corp volunteers in October, and we had a few community volunteers start as well. The 2nd grade teachers, Ms. Leyva, Mr. Ibarra, Ms. Hoffman, and Ms. Zoetewey, have been very helpful, and everyone is working together as a team to make sure the students are getting the most out of their time with their Reading Buddies. Read more >>
