Your Monthly News & Updates – October 2018
A Note from Our Executive Director
“We make a living by what we get. We make a life by what we give.” Sir Winston Churchill

After being a professional public school educator for over 30 years (oops giving away my age!) I can tell you that I thought that I had been exposed to most every program around and many of them as 2.0 or 3.0 versions. I am here to tell you, and in no way taking any personal credit for it, that the Reading Buddy Program is the best one around. Read more >>

Reading Buddy Insider

Relationship Building in Your First Few Sessions
The title Reading Buddy implies two roles for the volunteer: reading tutor and supportive mentor. Both roles are important and intertwined. When we build strong, supportive relationships with students they feel more at ease to take the risks that learning requires. Because of this it makes sense to take some time in the first few sessions to get to know your students. What you learn about your students will help you to tailor your sessions to fit their unique interests and talents and help them to feel comfortable tackling challenges with you. Here are some ideas to help you get off to a strong start: Read the full tip here >>>

Book Buddy News

Reagan High School Honor Society is again proving to be a valuable partner to Book Buddies, having started the year by agreeing to help at many sorting sessions. On Saturday, September 22, they backed that up by working like beavers to help reduce the pile of unsorted books that have come in since our Book Celebrations in May. In all, they finished sorting, boxing, and labeling 22 boxes – all ready for next spring’s giveaway in San Antonio’s most at-risk schools. Thank you RHS! Read more >>
