A Note from Our Executive Director

In this season of giving thanks, we at San Antonio Youth Literacy, above all else, are thankful for all those who support us. Our volunteers who give unselfishly to children who need a helping hand; our SAYL Board of Directors who advocate for the children of San Antonio and Bexar County; the many school administrators, support staff and teachers who work hand-in-hand with our staff and Reading Buddies; and lastly for each and every individual who supports our mission through their generous donations. Read more here…

Phonics Tip – The Letter “Y”
Teaching phonics rules to your students is an awesome way to empower them with strategies to decode unknown words. Oftentimes people think phonics rules can be boring and complicated for students, but they can really be fun. Rooting the rule in a fun experience will not only help your students remember the rule, but also help them enjoy decoding unknown words. See the tips and worksheets here.

Refresher Training Series 2016-2017

Part One – Learning to Read
New Session Added! Saturday, December 3,10:30 a.m.
In Part One of our two-part refresher training series the focus will be on strategies to help students learn the skills required to read accurately and fluently. The workshop will be presented by our new Program Manager, Kelly Daus, a former 2nd grade teacher with a degree in Elementary Education from Duke University.
Book Buddy News
Good news – Book Buddies World Headquarters now has about 8,000 children’s books collected, sorted and boxed ready for delivery to the schools next spring. That’s an impressive number, and it’s thanks to all the hard work of volunteers running drives and sorting those books! But we need many more books if we are going to meet our goal of supplying 20 elementary schools next May.  Read more here…

Reading Buddy Spotlight
Valerie Thornberry is a returning Reading Buddy this year at Baskin Elementary in SAISD. After retiring from UTSA, Valerie was in search of a program where she could work with children and reading. “This is something that I have always wanted to do,” stated Thornberry. “I think it is important for children to be able to read well because that’s how they learn and how they do well in life.” Read more here…
Site Director Spotlight
Please meet Ms. Natasha Dennis, our Site Director of the Month! This is Ms. Dennis’ first year serving as the Site Director at Bowden Elementary, but she is no stranger to SAYL and the Reading Buddy Program. Prior to being at Bowden, Ms. Dennis served at the district office last year, and was a 2nd grade teacher at Cameron Elementary prior to that where students in her class participated in the program.
