Blue Box Bar at the Pearl – 312 Pearl Parkway
5-8pm
A percentage of all drink sales between 5-8 p.m. will go towards the SAYL Reading Buddy Program. Hourly raffle prizes include gift cards, wine, and more! Light snacks will be provided. Stop by after work and bring a friend!

Summer Volunteer Opportunities
 
Project Transformation
Are you looking to keep tutoring this summer? Check out Project Transformation Rio Texas and learn more about their summer volunteer opportunities! Project Transformation needs volunteers for each week at each of their site churches to read with elementary-aged participants for two hours each day. Adults or high school students can volunteer Monday-Thursday from June 12 to July 27, from 10 am to 12 pm. Volunteers can commit to one day each week, one whole week, one day out of the summer, or anything in between! Sign-up Here >>
Camp Read-Aloud
Join San Antonio Youth Literacy’s Camp Read-Aloud and help the SAYL Staff create a fun adventure each week with an exciting read-aloud book and follow-up activities! You will be helping 1st, 2nd, and 3rd grade students improve their literacy skills by reading and playing educational games together! Volunteer one week or all six. Camp Read-Aloud will be held June 12 – August 3. Sign-up Here >>
Storytime at the Witte
Are you looking to volunteer and read to those who are eager to hear the adventures in books such as Pete the Cat or Piggie and Elephant? Then sign up to read to families and young children at the Witte Museum. Story time takes place the third Tuesday of each month, and this summer we will also be helping at the Witte’s Super Saturday events June 24 and July 29 from 12-4pm. Sign-up Here >>
Book Buddy News

Book Buddies has been very busy getting ready for this year’s book celebrations in elementary schools. We have enough books this year to give every child in eight elementary schools several books to take home to start their very own libraries. This doubles the number of schools served last year and means we will provide 3,895 children with books to read over the summer! Read more >>

Volunteer Spotlight
We are pleased to introduce our May Reading Buddy of the Month, Mrs. Mona Mengler. Mengler is a Reading Buddy at Beacon Hill Elementary in SAISD and is currently finishing her third year as a volunteer with SAYL.
As an avid reader herself, Mengler has always had the desire to volunteer with a literacy organization. After attending our Hooked on Books Breakfast honoring Sheriff Pamerleau in the fall of 2014, she was driven to become a Reading Buddy after learning some shocking statistics. Read more >>
Site Director Spotlight
SAYL is happy to announce that our May Site Director of the Month is Ms. Ruby Gutierrez, the Instructional Reading Coach at Regency Place Elementary. This is Gutierrez’s second year coordinating the Reading Buddy Program at her campus, and she truly goes above and beyond!
Gutierrez is passionate about helping her students become good readers and she is committed to making the SAYL partnership part of the formula for success. Read more >>
