Birthday on March 2. Theodor Seuss Geisel, was an American writer, cartoonist, animator, book publisher, and artist best known for authoring children’s books under the pen name Dr. Seuss. Read more here…

It was wonderful to have so many volunteers attend our spring Reading Buddy Seminar: A Focus on Comprehension. This month’s Reading Buddy Tip is for those of you who were unable to attend the seminar but are still looking for ways to help build your students’ comprehension skills. Read more here…
Book Buddy News

Last month brought a number of offers for hosting book drives. It seems that word has gotten out that doing a book drive for Book Buddies is a fun, useful service project for all kinds of organizations. And indeed it is! It is easy to organize a drive at any neighborhood organization, sports team, house of worship, workplace, school — or anyplace else people gather. Read more here…

Volunteer Spotlight
Please meet Lisa Castle, our Reading Buddy of the Month! Lisa is a native San Antonian and is currently working on her master’s degree at Our Lady of the Lake University. Lisa has always been very involved with her community and understands the importance of giving back. She wanted to make an even bigger impact on her community, especially with young children and their education. Read more here…
Site Director Spotlight
Please meet our Site Directors of the month, Yvonne Jagger and Teri James at Serna Elementary! Yvonne has served as a K-5 Instructional Interventionist at Serna for over twenty-eight years and this is her third year serving as our Site Director. Teri has served as the Literacy Coach at Serna for over eighteen years and this is her second year serving as Co-Site Director. Read more here…
Volunteer Opportunities
We have placed our final Reading Buddies for this school year, but that doesn’t mean we are through! SAYL has several other volunteer opportunities availbable in the next few months. If you are looking for something to do on the weekends, we are hanging out at some Saturday events in April and we would love to have some volunteers with us. Read more here…

A Huge Thank You to the William Dean Charitable Foundation for their financial support of the SAYL Reading Buddy Program in the amount of $17,500. The foundation supports literacy and educational purposes and we are very honored to have them as a partner in our efforts to address the reading needs of San Antonio’s youth.
