A Note from Our Executive Director
“You’re never too old, too wacky, too wild to pick up a book and read to a child.” – Dr. Seuss
Well, we have been off the grid for a bit. We have been reconstructing our website and by we, I mean Mary Flannigan, our Communications and Partnerships Director and a web wizard (from the world of the internet.) If and when you see Mary, please give her a big thank you! Wow! What an undertaking.
So anyway, we are back and so happy to be reconnected. While we were gone, we finished up another school year (very successfully – stay tuned for Laura Nygaard’s data on the Reading Buddy Program)… Read more >>

Book Buddy News

Book Buddies concluded the 2017 – 2018 year in great style, building on the growth we’ve experienced every year since our beginning in 2014.
This year we were able to hold May Book Celebrations in 13 elementary schools in SAISD.  And for the first time every child in every one of those schools got to choose 5 books! This means that in all 35,095 books were given to the schools, and 6,306 children in grades Pre-K through 7 were able to take books to start their home libraries. Read more >>
Volunteer Spotlight – Provenir Healthcare
SAYL’s participation in the Super Sumer Readers program this summer has created an additional outlet for volunteers to get involved and help support developing readers. This month we would like to recognize a group of volunteers from Provenir Healthcare. Nathan McDuell, Jr.reached out to SAYL in early June about opportunities for his group to volunteer. Read more >>
Donor Spotlight
SAYL extends a huge thank you to the following foundations and organizations for their financial support this last month. St. Mark’s Episcopal Church made a donation of $5,000 and is a new partner with SAYL. We appreciate their support and look forward to the possibility of having some of their congregation join us in becoming Reading Buddies! Grande Communications/Grande Cares Club donated $1,200 through contributions from their employees – some who are also Reading Buddies. Enterprise Holdings Foundation gave a donation of $1,000 and is another new supporter – welcome aboard. Another long-time supporter, the Dominion Rotary Foundation has donated $500. And last, but by far not least, is the Frankie Casseb Youth Literacy Club who has made another quarterly donation of $350, bringing their total contribution to $1,400 for this fiscal year. To all of you we say THANK YOU, and welcome to our family of partners!!
