Executive Director’s Note
“If you want to touch the past, touch a rock.
If you want to touch the present, touch a flower.
If you want to touch the future, touch a life.” -Unknown
Well, the earth has made another trip around the sun and we find ourselves once again beginning the journey a new. For me, as I imagine for most of you, New Year’s Eve is spent in reflection. How can we make resolutions for a new year without evaluating our resolution of the year coming to an end? Was giving of your time, talents or treasure included on your list of resolutions? Reading Buddy Insider Reading Buddy Tip of the Month:
Back from Winter Break and Ready to Read
After two weeks off from school, many children lose some reading proficiency, particularly if they did not do much recreational reading over the break. For your first session back, you may consider choosing books from a lower reading level or re-reading a book you read before the break to help ease back into the academic routine and help your students regain their confidence. Book Buddies News HAPPY NEW YEAR TO ALL OUR BOOK BUDDY FRIENDS!
Our Volunteers. Working right up to the holidays, Book Buddies volunteers sorted and boxed donated books to get them ready for our spring Book Celebrations. As always, the Reagan High School chapter of the National Honor Society has been sending volunteers on Monday evenings, right into the final exam period, along with volunteers from John Jay High School. On December 13 Wal-Mart regional managers showed us their holiday spirit by working hard to sort and box up an entire Gaylord carton of books – about 2,000 books in one morning! That’s the holiday spirit! Read more >>>

Volunteer Spotlight Reading Buddy Steven Simpson
Our Reading Buddy of the month goes to Steven Simpson. Mr. Simpson has been with SAYL for two years now and volunteers at Green Elementary in SAISD. He first learned about the Reading Buddy program through a public service announcement on Texas Public Radio’s classic station. When he heard the broadcast he thought it would be a good thing to do. “I really believe that if you help a child you are improving the future,” noted Simpson. Read more >>>

School Spotlight
Clear Spring Elementary
Congratulations to our School of the Month – Clear Spring Elementary in NEISD! Our volunteers are always greeted by Clear Spring’s friendly front office staff before their session begins, and our helpful Site Director, Ms. Cardenas, can usually be found in her office right next to the SAYL trunk. As the school’s Instructional Intervention Teacher, she is always willing to go the extra mile and gladly offers tips and advice to Reading Buddies who would like to learn a little more about how to make the most out of their time with their students. Donor Spotlight
Getting support from those in our community means so much to the SAYL Reading Buddy Program and The Greehey Family Foundation exemplifies that support through their recent donation of $20,000. This generous donation allows San Antonio Youth Literacy the opportunity to continue to deliver our program to those children struggling to read on grade level. THANK YOU, THANK YOU, THANK YOU!
