During the month of February, we turn our thoughts to matters of the heart. One of my favorite memories as an elementary school student was that of creating a paper sac Valentine Bag that would be used to collect those precious one-line Valentines that my fellow classmates and I would share with one another. Read more here…

Reading Buddy Tip – Wait Time
 
One of the hardest things to do as a reading tutor is to not immediately help your student figure out a word they do not know. However, research shows it is only in giving students adequate “wait time” that they are truly able to strengthen their decoding skills and become better readers. Check out the full tip here.

Reading Buddy Seminar:

Reading to Learn, a Focus on Comprehension
This Reading Buddy Seminar will focus on ways you can help deepen your students’ understanding of the books they read. We will go over strategies for helping your students summarize text, get the main idea, make inferences, and grow their vocabulary. This class is ideal for new and returning Reading Buddy volunteers.

Book Buddies has big news!
WE’VE MOVED! Needing to move out of our borrowed temporary quarters in Colonies North, we have arranged a partnership with SAISD through the good will of Superintendent Pedro Martinez. On January 23  we moved into a stand-alone building that was formerly the gym of Brewer Elementary. Read more here…
Volunteer Spotlight
Please meet Diane Boehme, our Reading Buddy of the month! Diane retired from Kelly Air Force Base after thirty-two years of holding multiple leadership positions. Diane continues to be a community leader by educating our youth and being involved in her church.This is Diane’s first year volunteering with the Reading Buddy Program at Cotton Elementary. Read more here…
Site Director Spotlight
This month we would like to honor Mr. Lionel Contreras as our Site Director of the month! He is the Implementation Specialist at Mission Academy in SAISD, and this is his first year serving as our Site Director. Mr. Contreras has been nothing but amazing this school year assisting with the Reading Buddy Program. Read more here…
