A Note from Our Executive Director
The anticipation of a new school year is in the air. Now all we need is our first cold, or should I say cool front to really put us in the mood. But, as excited about a new year as we are, we have taken time to look back and reflect on our successes and recognize opportunities for improvement. We are proud to report that 758 Reading Buddy volunteers served 1,374 students in the Big Three School districts, NEISD, NISD, and SAISD to improve an average 4 reading levels. But we refuse to rest on our laurels.  Read more here…

Reading Buddy Trainings Underway!

Trainings for new Reading Buddy volunteers are underway for the 2016-2017 school year. If you or someone you know can give just one hour a week to help two, 2nd grade students become life-long readers sign-up to be a Reading Buddy today! Volunteers are asked to attend a 90 minute training session, pass a criminal background check, and give just one hour a week during the school day. For more info visit or email
SAYL Welcomes New Program Staff
SAYL is pleased to welcome Ellen Van Meter as our part-time Program Manager. Ellen, who has previously served as a Reading Buddy, received her Bachelors of Arts in English and Spanish Literature from the University of Michigan.
