A Note from Our Executive Director
“Unless someone like you cares a whole awful lot, nothing is going to get better. Its not.” -Dr. Seuss
As I sit down to pen this message, children across San Antonio are donning their “first day of school” outfits, carefully placing new school supplies (to include those fabulous untouched crayons – the box of 64 if you are lucky) into book bags to begin a new year of school.

Reading Buddy Insider
Reading Buddy Communities
SAYL now offers a new way for Reading Buddies to connect with staff and gain access to their volunteer profile. This school year, Reading Buddies can now interact with SAYL staff through a social media-like community known as Chatter; volunteers can send messages to staff members via Chatter, and then, receive “lightning fast” responses to their questions or concerns. Reading Buddies can also view and edit their volunteer profile. They will be able to: make changes to their personal information and availability, view current and past students, and access their school’s staff contact information. The SAYL staff hopes this new feature will not only encourage communication but also allow Reading Buddies to engage in their volunteer participation a different way.
Please check your inboxes in the coming weeks to learn more and register to login to the Reading Buddy Community!

Book Buddy News
Book Buddies is all moved into our new headquarters in the gym of the former WW White School. Thanks to SAISD, the premises are freshly cleaned and sparkling for the new year of book drives. During our August 9 organizational meeting for the new school year, we set an ambitious (but obtainable) goal of 40,000 to 50,000 books. This doubles last year’s number, so it’s time for everybody to start thinking about getting going on those book drives! Read more >>
