Our Reading Buddy of the month for March is Amando Estrada. This is Amando’s fourth year serving as a SAYL Reading Buddy. He found out about the program through an article in the Express-News. During his first three years with the program he worked with students at Crockett Elementary in SAISD. This year he has been matched with students at J.T. Brackenridge, also in SAISD.
Amando finds the program to be very rewarding! His passion for being a Reading Buddy comes from his own personal reflection of not having anyone instill the love of reading with him as a child. “I wanted to make a difference in a child’s life. I don’t remember having anyone make an impact on me in helping me discover the joy and benefits of reading. Reading is the gateway to knowledge, and knowledge empowers us. Reading broadens our imagination, which leads us to our dreams. If I am able to motivate one child, to inspire a spark in their heart for reading & learning, I will have succeeded,” commented Amando.
With the tools of patience and understanding, Amando is able to build an environment where his students can grow in their literacy. We are very thankful to have him as a Reading Buddy!
