Well we have certainly had a busy summer! Our collaborative program with Harvey Najim, Boys & Girls Club and SA Youth is winding down and now it will be our charge to look at the data. We will be spending the next month or so gathering Fall test scores from our participants and our control group students to see what it tells us about “Summer Slide.” Read more >> |

Fall Luncheon:
Addressing Academic Inequalities in San Antonio
Friday, October 5
Pearl Stable
11:00am – 1:00pm
Join us for our fall luncheon featuring a panel discussion on academic inequality in San Antonio, featuring a presentation by Dr. Christine Drennon, Associate Professor of Sociology and Anthropology at Trinity University and panel discussion with Sarah Baray, CEO of Pre-K 4 SA, and Dr. Mohammed Choudhury, Chief Innovation Officer for SAISD, moderated by Robert Rivard.
Tables of 8 start at $2,500 with plenty of other sponsorship levels available. Individual tickets are $200 per person with a special price of $50 for active Reading Buddy volunteers.

Camp Read-Aloud Wrap Up This year’s Camp Read-Aloud wrapped up the last week of July, and we are all going to miss spending time with the awesome kiddos at Catholic Charities and Ella Austin Community Center. We read six books over the summer, played literacy games, and made awesome crafts each week. The kids also participated in San Antonio Public Library’s Mayor’s Summer Reading Club where they had the opportunity to earn a free book if they read eight different titles during reading time at camp. Book Buddy News The school year is upon us and it is never too early to start a book drive! This past school year our Book Buddies team was able to give out over 40,000 books, and we are hoping to double (Yes! Double!) that for the upcoming year. In order to do so we need to start collecting books now. If you or your organization is interested in holding a book drive, or would like information on holding one, please email bookbuddies@saylonline.wpengine.com.

Reading Buddy Insider
The new school year is just weeks away and the SAYL staff is gearing up for another great year! If you are a returning Reading Buddy we will be reaching out to each of you once we have the new tutoring schedules from the schools. In the meantime, we would love for you to help us reach more students this year! Do you have a friend, coworker, or family member who would be interested in becoming a Reading Buddy? Please send them our way! New volunteers can sign-up for an upcoming training session via saylonline.wpengine.com or they can email Mary Flannigan at mary.flannigan@saylonline.wpengine.com for more information. Please help us spread the word about this super fun and rewarding program!
