Congratulations to our school of the month, Barkley-Ruiz Elementary School in SAISD. Their much-deserved recognition comes from a long record of selflessness and care that includes creating a welcoming and accommodating environment for those involved our program.
We would also like to commend Ms. Spicer, our Site Director, who got Barkley-Ruiz involved with SAYL after seeing, first-hand, the positive effects being made with the students that were served. Seeing how the students grew in confidence and reading skills, she promotes a fun environment that continuously lets the students improve their reading year round. When asked why she feels it is important to read with children she states, “At this young age, children can improve and increase their language and literacy from as much exposure as possible, and that includes having adults or mentors reading to children. They are like sponges, absorbing information, and only good things can come from reading to children, regardless of their age”.
We are grateful to have schools like Barkley-Ruiz that believe in the tremendous potential that these children have. Thank you for what you do.
