A Note from Our Executive Director
“Anyone who does anything to help a child in his life is a hero to me.” – Fred Rogers
Ok so I grew up with Captain Kangaroo but our son was fortunate enough to have both Captain Kangaroo and Mr. Rogers as a part of his early years. What a life saver for the student mother trying to get the early morning chaos organized. Both of these men believed in a kinder, gentler alternative to the violent cartoon shows of the day.

Sip & Spell with SAYL
Friday, April 13 – 7pm Cherrity Bar, 302 Montana St.
Come try your luck on San Antonio Youth Literacy’s twist on an old school classic! The spelling bee from your youth without the anxiety! Face-off against other hives by working with your team (up to 4 players) to compete for the title of Sip & Spell Champion!

Two Options to Attend! Tuesday, April 17 – Local at Pearl
Wednesday, April 18 – Local at Sonterra
7:00-10:30am
Join SAYL for a morning cup of coffee or tea! Stop by the Pearl Local Coffee location on April 17th or the E. Sonterra Boulevard location on April 18th and receive a morning beverage on SAYL! Mingle with staff and fellow volunteers. Bring a friend to learn more about SAYL and they will also receive a free coffee on us!

Reading Buddy Insider
One of the most common inquiries we get from volunteers is: how can I help my student focus better? Whether students are dealing with diagnosed attention deficit disorder, or simply have a lot of energy and trouble directing it to the task of reading, it can be challenging to help kids find ways to focus. Check out these tips on how to help your student stay focused.

Book Buddy News
Volunteers have been very busy at Book Buddies headquarters in March. We’ve been sorting and boxing those 22 huge Gaylord cartons of books to get them ready in time for the big giveaways at the schools in May. It’s a big job, but Book Buddies volunteers are the best. In the last month alone they’ve logged at least 196 hours of volunteer work! Read more >>

Volunteer Spotlight – Jessica Nelson & Leslie Chasnoff
This month we would like to honor Jessica Nelson and Leslie Chasnoff as our Reading Buddies of the Month! Jessica and Leslie have been wonderful Reading Buddies and mentors this school year at Bowden Elementary in SAISD. This is Jessica’s forth year as a Reading Buddy and Leslie’s second year volunteering with SAYL. The two learned about the program through our partnership with the San Antonio Museum of Art where Jessica serves as the Teacher and School Programs Manager and Leslie is the Museum’s Public Programs Manager. School Spotlight – Arnold Elementary
This month SAYL would like to recognize Arnold Elementary for our School Spotlight!
Our Site Director and point of contact at Arnold is the wonderful Ms. Katanna Larralde-Sanchez. Ms. Larralde-Sanchez, who serves as the school’s Parent Family Liaison, has helped facilitate the program on campus for several years, and always works to make the Reading Buddies feel welcome and supported on campus. Donor Spotlight
San Antonio Youth Literacy would like to thank Mr. Harvey Najim for challenging our donors to a $5,000.00 match funding during the 2018 Big Give SA that was held March 22. Thanks to his generosity and motivation we were able to meet and exceed our goal of $15,000.00 this year. Moreover, as many nonprofits in San Antonio know, Harvey isn’t just a once a year kind’a guy. Whenever he sees a need in the community he is there to lead the way on raising money for worthy causes, particularly in cases involving children. Read more >>
