A Note from Our Executive Director
“I feel the need of reading. It is a loss to man not to have grown up among books.” – Abraham Lincoln
How fitting that during the birthday month of one of America’s greatest citizens, we should reflect on his words concerning reading and books. Even though Lincoln came from a humble beginning, his passion for literature and its importance are well known. Having been born in the “Land of Lincoln,” (Illinois) and living with my mother’s parents during my dad’s Air Force absences, I was well acquainted with Lincoln lore.

Pizza for a Purpose Wednesday, February 7 – all day

California Pizza Kitchen (Quarry Market location only) will donate 20% of your check to SAYL on Wednesday, February 7! Purchases include dine in, take out, catering, and all beverages. Come have lunch or dinner and help support SAYL! Don’t forget to tell your friends!

Save the Date! Sip & Spell with SAYL
Friday, April 13 – 7pm Cherrity Bar, 302 Montana St.
Save the date for SAYL’s first annual adult spelling bee, Sip & Spell with SAYL! Teams of up to four will compete in this fun and friendly competition. The event will be held at the new Cherrity Bar which has their own creative, new way to raise money for nonprofits. Stay tuned for more event details and for team registration!

Book Buddy News
BIG NEWS!! We have big news at Book Buddies World Headquarters! After much hoping and waiting on our part, the international book reseller, Better World Books, accepted our application and has shipped us 22 Gaylords of free children’s books. We received them last Monday, and the SAISD personnel were ready with a fork lift and three pallet jacks to unload them and move them into our facility. The total is around 40,000 books – weighing almost ten tons! Read more >>

Volunteer Spotlight – Alexis De Leon
Congratulations to Alexis De Leon, our SAYL Reading Buddy of the Month! Alexis is a first-year volunteer at Antonio Margil Elementary in SAISD, and initially heard about SAYL through her work. “I work for the Grand Hyatt for San Antonio, and our company is partnering with you. I have a bunch of younger siblings and a brother in 2nd grade, so I thought if I could help him I could help others,’ she said. Read more >>

School Spotlight – Rogers Academy
Our spotlight school of the month is Rogers Academy of SAISD, and its Site Coordinator Dr. Holly Baker Hill. Hill has been working with our Reading Buddies at Rogers for the past three years, and has noticed many benefits the program has given to her students. “Definitely having the buddy builds the students’ confidence, so not only is it fantastic that they have a buddy they get to read to, every week they bond with and have a [volunteer] as a mentor and as another adult, which is huge in their lives,” Hill said. Donor Spotlight
A GREAT BIG THANK YOU to the V H McNutt Memorial Foundation who was gracious enough to once again support our SAYL Reading Buddy Program with a donation in the amount of $5,000. We are extremely proud to have them as a member of our ‘tribe’ and for supporting our ongoing efforts to continue to deliver our Reading Buddy Program to those children who need assistance in reading on grade level.
