How did it get so late so soon? It’s night before it’s afternoon. December is here before it’s June. My goodness how the time has flewn. How did it get so late so soon?-Dr. Seuss
I know that all of you are feeling this way this time of the year. I am for sure. Wasn’t it just yesterday that I was unearthing the decorations from beneath the stairwell? It seems that every year flies by faster than the last—is that just a phenomenon of my age? Nah…Anyway, even though we are all swept up with endings, we need to try to live in the moment while continuing to plan for the future. Here at San Antonio Youth Literacy (SAYL), we are very happy to report that we have over 500 Reading Buddies in the schools we serve but continue to train and match volunteers with students. In addition, we are working with the City of San Antonio Faith Based Initiative that is addressing the various social issues facing San Antonio by bringing the community together to accomplish common goals. One of those issues is the high rate of illiteracy, most importantly to us, child illiteracy. We are so fortunate to be included in this effort and look forward to 2018 with big plans and high hopes for its positive outcomes.
Although we are quickly approaching the end of 2017, we look forward to 2018 and beyond. We continue to take pride in the success of our program and being able to offer it at no cost to the school districts we serve. Of course, in order to maintain the integrity of the program and be as nonintrusive as possible to the school staffs we are there to assist, we must employ highly qualified personnel. That requires funding. During this time of the year when we are all making a list and checking it twice while experiencing the clarity of giving, let us all remember the many children of San Antonio who are helped by the Reading Buddies of SAYL. Let’s not let it get to be the night before the afternoon, December here before June.
