5 Ways to Make Reading Fun for Reluctant Readers

Some children are naturally drawn to books—others need a little encouragement. If your child resists reading time, you’re not alone! The good news? There are simple and creative ways to spark a lifelong love for reading. Here are five fun, effective strategies to make reading more enjoyable—especially for reluctant readers.

1. Let Them Choose the Book

When kids have a say in what they read, they feel more invested. Whether it’s a comic book, a joke book, or a LEGO manual—if they’re reading, it counts!

💡 Try This: Head to the library and let your child pick out three books—any three. Giving them control makes it more exciting.

2. Create a Cozy Reading Nook

Environment matters! A comfy corner with pillows, blankets, and soft lighting can turn reading into something special and calming.

🛋️ Pro Tip: Let your child help design their nook—it becomes a space that feels like their own.

3. Read With Voices

Turn storytime into showtime! Use funny voices, sound effects, and facial expressions to make characters come alive—it adds joy and keeps them hooked.

🎭 Bonus: Let your child “cast” you in the story. They’ll love assigning roles and jumping into the fun.

4. Keep It Short & Sweet

Reading doesn’t have to take an hour. A consistent 10–15 minutes a day is more powerful than you think. Focus on making it a routine, not a chore.

⏱️ Tip: Set a fun timer or use a sand timer to make it feel like a challenge instead of a task.

5. Turn It Into a Game

Gamify reading with sticker charts, scavenger hunts, or a “reading bingo” board. Incentives keep kids motivated and engaged.

🎲 Try This: Make a bingo card with categories like “a book with animals” or “a book that made you laugh.”

Every child’s reading journey is different—and that’s a beautiful thing. With a little creativity and consistency, you can help them discover the joy of books. Keep it light, keep it fun, and most of all—keep showing up. One page at a time adds up!
