Book Buddy News
Even in this busy holiday season the eager Book Buddies team is thinking about children’s literacy and organizing book drives. A few we have heard about recently include Aventine Hill Partners; Indian Springs Elementary in Comal ISD, where teacher Jaime Ringlein is organizing a March 2017 drive; ETS (again this year, after giving us lots of help last year), and Carrie Avery’s Brownie troop. Read more here…
Reading Buddy Spotlight
Our Volunteer of the Month for December is Officer David Nouhan or “Officer Dave” as how his students address him. This is Officer Dave’s second year serving as a Reading Buddy volunteer. He first learned about the opportunity through a daily bulletin at SAPD calling for volunteers to read at schools and immediately wanted to get involved. “If a child has had a good education, good reading levels, they’ll excel later on in life. They will have more opportunities, job wise, career wise, school wise,” states Officer Dave. Read more here…
Site Director Spotlight
Please give a round of applause to Ms. Jennifer Santellan from Dellview Elementary! Ms. Santellan is the school’s Instructional Intervention Teacher and has served as our Site Director for two years.
As an enthusiastic supporter of the Reading Buddy Program she always comes out to meet tutors on their first session and helps them navigate the school, as well as their students’ changing schedules. Ms. Santellan really takes the time to get to know the students and helps to ensure that the volunteers have the knowledge they need to best serve their Buddies.
